2010 Scholium Project, Sauvignon Blanc “The Prince in His Caves” Farina Vineyard, Sonoma Mountain.
This wild wine is one of my favorite Sauvignon Blancs in California, along with Greystack, Morlet and Peter Michael, but this one is way outside the box and is half way to “Orange” wine with a touch of color and leesy. Abe Schoener is making some amazing wines and is on the cutting edge, all his wines push the envelope and challenge convention, which in this case really works and has given birth to a fantastic and flavorful Sauvignon Blanc. The nose is bright and fresh with tangy lemon/lime, grapefruit, gooseberry and melons and the cloudy color tinged wine fills the mouth with texture, zesty mango, kiwi and citrus all play with a hint of white peach on the palate while touches of mineral and lively acidity keep things fresh and firm. This is an exotic white that deserves attention, I’m certainly impressed and I highly recommend it, it really is taking a different road, but a great reward for the adventurous!
