2024 Weingut Bründylmayer, Grüner Veltliner, L & T, Kamptal, Austria.
The L & T Grüner is a great and mineral driven basic entry level wine from Bründylmayer in the Kamptal with an ultra pale straw/gold hue in the glass and sublimely crisp and bone dry palate, giving a lively fresh personality that includes lemon/lime, tangy peach, bitter almond and white pepper notes. This pleasing lighter framed wine is classic Bründylmayer and Grüner in the bottle and its low alcohol, steely charm and saline quality make it mouth watering and wonderful with oysters and a variety of lighter cuisine choices. For this version of Grüner Veltliner, Bründylmayer went for extreme freshness and purity with grapes sourced from various Kamptal terraces and their rocky loess soils and seeing exclusively stainless steel fermentation and aging, which very successfully transmits the essence of place. I’ve been a long time fan of Bründylmayer, following their wines for more than 20 years now, and I never get bored of these incredible wines and this one is an outstanding value.
The Bründlmayer estate, in Austria’s Kamptal region, organically farms 90 hectares of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, St. Laurent, Zweigelt and Burgundian varieties from an impressive collection of Grand Cru vineyards around Langenlois and is one of the country’s most prized wineries. It is said that the region has some of the most geologically diverse terroirs in Europe are here, in the heart of the Kamptal and Bründymayer expresses these sites with precision and pride of place. The Danube and Kamp rivers and the wooded hills of the Waldviertel forest create a climate with large diurnal temperature swings, essential to a long growing season with loess and loam soils that are very stony. Some of these rocky, terraced vineyards are not the steep, jagged terraces of the Kremstal or the Wachau, but these are larger wider terraces here help create their own unique micro climate. This vintage, which reminds me of 2016 and that is high praise, really captures the best of the Kamptal and this is a brilliant offering again from Bründymayer, one of my favorite producers, and I highly recommend it!
