2003 Azienda Vinicola Calabretta, Etna Rosso DOC, Sicily, Italy.
This Etna blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio is in fact the newest release from Calabretto, a winery on Sicily’s volcano Mount Etna that must like extended aging in their own cellars, rather than the customers, not that I’m complaining, in fact I find it remarkable and I really enjoy this mature red. These grapes are lovingly compared to Pinot Noir in that they transmit terroir and elegance in a medium weight wine that has delicate character and pretty details, and Calabretta’s Etna Rosso is a fine example. The volcanic soils and earthy qualities add to the subtle mix red fruits and grilled herb notes. The nose has a flinty spice note along with baked cherry and dried flowers which lead to a palate of dried currants, stewed plums, lavender oil, chalky minerals and kirsch. There is soft tannins, dry savory notes and enough acidity to keep things focused. I am convinced this wine will age another 5 years with ease, but I doubt anyone would want to go much longer, and it is near it’s best now.
