2010 Bu Bruliam, Pinot Noir “Soberanes Vineyard” Santa Lucia Highlands.
This is exciting, a talented new artisan winemaker and the grapes from Pisoni’s new vineyard “Soberanes” in the Santa Lucia Highlands, and the results are lovely and make for a brilliant wine. Kerith Overstreet is a name to watch, and her Bu Bruliam label a wine to look out for, she makes only a few barrels so far, but it is worth checking her out, and if you don’t see her wines in stores or your favorite bistro, go to her website (www.bruliamwines.com) and order yours up there. She gives a lot to charity and lets you pick your favorite causes, so it is win win. The 2010 Bu Bruliam Pinot Noir “Soberanes” is elegantly rich and deep in color, she used a Rhone submerged cap technique to grape more pigment and not get harsh tannins and the rewards shine in the glass and the dark ruby hue is beautiful. The nose is not unlike Garys’ Vineyard with blackberry, earth, mocha and char with subtle floral notes coming through which lead to a full palate of round cherry, plum and framboise with hints of tea spices and mineral tones. It will be interesting to follow this wine over the next year or two, the buzz is that this vineyard is going to be the next big thing in the Highlands, and so far it looks very promising.
