2010 Christophe Buisson, Saint-Romain “Sous le Château” Red Burgundy, France.
Buisson has become a star in the last few vintages and is one of the gems of Kermit Lynch’s impressive Burgundy lineup, offering beautiful wines at very fair prices. His 2008 and 2009 whites were all knock outs, and it looks as if 2010 is a step up even from what I have tasted so far, plus his reds look very good too, especial this 2010 Saint-Romain Sous le Chateau. This Pinot is ripe and vivid with lush fruit character and fresh acidity keeping everything balanced, Buisson’s use of wood looks near perfect for the vintage giving clean and clear flavors and just a touch of toasty smoke and roundness. The nose is slightly closed still with hints of red flowers, strawberry jam and truffle before a richly textured palate of plum, dried currants and bright cherry with mineral, chalk and a whiff of licorice and a touch of spice. Give a bit of time to evolve, and enjoy it over the next 3-5 years, it is a rewarding Burgundy that seems a pretty decent value, and be sure to check out his whites as well.
