2024 Vignerons de Buxy, Montagny, Bourgogne Blanc, France.
Just like the last vintage, the 2024 Montagny is delightfully crisp and mineral driven white Burgundy that does everything just as it should and is very pleasing, especially for the price and in particular it is a lovely bistro style offering that will please most palates. I found it again at a cozy wine bar, called the Block, in Pacific Grove, where they are just building a nice drinking list and offering small bites, it is a perfect place to celebrate the day and or grab an aperitif before dinner in a town full of exciting restaurant choices, and this Vignerons de Buxy really hit the spot. This chalky Chardonnay, made with mostly in stainless steel with no overt wood, has a medium body and gives lemony citrus, apple, and Asian pear fruits, plus a core of wet stone, clove spice, some leesy notes, and orange floral aromas. This wine comes from vines set on clay and limestone soils sourced from small family vineyards in Montagny, which is in Burgundy’s Côte Chalonnaise region. The co-op Vignerons de Buxy was one of the first wineries in Burgundy to be certified sustainable and now sees good exports.
The Vignerons de Buxy, as mentioned in my prior review, was founded originally back in Cote Chalonnaise in 1931 by a community of 98 vine growers, who, in the face of the Great Depression, sought to pool resources and formed this cooperative to survive this devastating period in Europe. Buxy says the grouping of the many little family plantings, all inspired by the same values of solidarity, sharing and conviviality, resulted in a brand that represents a human and social endeavor stretching back over 89 years. In1977, the Cave de Saint Gengoux le National merged with the Cave des Vignerons de Buxy and from then on to now, the Cave des Vignerons de Buxy’s production area expanded to include both the original Côte Chalonnaise as well as new vineyards the Mâconnais region. This meant, Vignerons de Buxy was able to offer a wider range of wines, with offerings from Santenay to Cluny, including the appellations of Montagny, seen here, Mercurey, Givry, Rully, Macon Village and Mâcon Saint Gengoux. Interestingly too, It made Vignerons de Buxy Burgundy’s leading supplier for Bourgogne Aligoté, a grape that is seen much wider attention these days from wine lovers, and along with Pinot Blanc is now allowed in some top regional White Burgundy and Mâcon wines.
