2009 Pascal Marchand, Morey-St.-Denis “Rue de Vergy” Red Burgundy, France.
This polished and silky smooth Burgundy shows ripe fruit and mouth filling texture in a medium weighted wine that has plenty of charms and gives lots of pleasing flavors. The nose is of dried flowers, red fruit and hints of game with mineral essences and mocha which leads to a rich palate of black cherry, poached plum and a mix of berry fruits while a fennel/licorice note, subtle wood spice, framboise and fig cake. I am fast becoming a fan of Pascal Marchand’s wines and this wine is a great example of fine Cote de Nuits and the pure terroir of Morey-St.-Denis with good fruit intensity, floral character and truffle/earth notes. I will say the 2010’s offer more heightened lift and focus, but it is hard not to like the easy early drinking of these 2009 wines and the Rue de Vergy does offer more than a little joy in the bottle.
