2009 Sean Thackrey, Pinot Noir “Andromeda” Devil’s Gulch Ranch, Marin County.
The latest Andromeda is beautiful and unique expression of Pinot Noir from the wilds of West Marin, between Fairfax and Pt. Reyes. Thackrey’s wines are always original and iconic, and this 2009 vintage seems to be a big step up in complexity for the Andromeda with all the pleasures of classic Pinot, but still having the Thackrey touches that his devotees seek in his wines. The nose starts with wild flowers, dried herbs and currants while hints of framboise and menthol waft through as well before a silky round palate of cherry, plum and strawberry fruit fills the mouth. The texture is smooth and the flavors are vivid with a backbone of lively acidity leaving a long finish that reveals mineral, lavender and fennel with just a kiss of subtle oak vanilla, smoke and mocha. This is one of Sean Thackrey’s most sexy efforts to date and it should drink well for more than a few years, in fact it just might get a bit better over the next 2 to 3 years time. While Pleiades and Orion remain Thackrey’s main wines, the Andromeda is really a gem and worth every penny, I high recommend searching some out.
